About Us

National Geographic magazine has ranked Machu Picchu 1st place among the 15 travel spots for iconic adventure! More precisely, regarding the hike up to the Huayna Picchu summit, which is the higher mountain on the citadel’s background. Read about it next.

The Hiking: Number 1 for Iconic Adventure

National Geographic and travel journalist Maryellen Duckett made an extensive review of places around the world worth of the effort, worth doing a trek. And the first position was won by the ancient “lost city of the Incas”. Especifically, since it is a ranking about trekking, the achievement was obtained by the Huayna Picchu (“Young Mountain”), the taller one of the two that can be seen at the site.

The hike to the Huayna Picchu top has become very famous among travelers, fact that the National Geographic ranking now acknowledges. This trek starts at the base of the mountain, and goes along Inca constructions like the Temple of the Moon, tunnels across the rocks, stone staircases.

The perfect reward is waiting at the top though: an enchanting 360 degrees view of the citadel and the entire, wide green valley, with the Urubamba river way down, snaking, shining across the canyon. All things considered, no doubt that the Young Mountain hike makes a very fit number one for iconic adventure destinations!

A wonderful view of the mountain Huayna Picchu.

The National Geographic Review

The elevation of the Huayna Picchu reaches 2.720 meters above sea level, but the height of the mountain itself is 360 meters, that is, the actual length to be hiked. The climbing, to and from, takes around 2 hours, and there is a limit of 200 people daily.

The hiking down from the top has been somewhat linked to danger because of the steeped staircases on the initial stretch, but this is more a first impression of some people. Walking down this section with care and without hurry or using a walking pole, will solve all worries for sure.

The iconic adventure of hiking the Young Mountain won number 1 on the National Geographic ranking ahead of classic destinations like the Acropolis, the leaning tower in Pisa, the Borobudur temple in Java, Chinese Great Wall and even the vanguardist spiraling ramps of the Reichstag in Berlin. Another major accomplishment for the ancient Inca builders!
