About Us

After Machu Picchu itself, the Inca Trails are the most famous tour packages in Peru; these hikes mostly go along the road system the Incas built to connect all the empire, which expanded from Cusco city’s valley until Colombia, Chile and Argentina. Winaywayna or Wiñaywayna is a magnificent Inca archaeological site which is part of both the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail and the Short 2-Day Inca Trail. On this article we’ll tell our readers about this wonderful place.

Winaywayna: an Amazing Inca Site

It is a construction located near the Machu Picchu citadel and looking to the beautiful Urubamba river, discovered sometime between 1940 and 1942 by the Wenner Gren Scientific Expedition, directed by Paul Fejos. In Quechua, Winaywayna means “Forever Young”. The site is located at 2.700 meters above sea level, that is, at a section where the Inca Trail has already turned downwards in altitude.

Winaywayna: The Building

Winaywayna has a wonderful architectural, agricultural and religious design; to begin with, it is patently clear that it follows the Inca worldview of adapting construction to the natural environment: Winaywayna is perfectly attached to a mountain slope, a really interesting way of building. This is so because Cusco’s Andes doesn’t offer much plain soil for cultivation thus the Incas had to modify mountain sides in order to make them ready for agricultural activities. The site displays a huge amount of terraces which were used for agriculture, mainly potato, corn and coca. As it was the rule in Inca economical organization, the complex also has administrative areas, one on the upper part of the site and one on the lower part, which were interconnected by a stone stairway. In these offices, Inca officials planned and controlled all agricultural production, guided by the Sun, the moon and the rain, that marked seasons; for instance, the time for harvest was early August – on today’s calendar- because days later comes the coldest part of the year in the region.

They kept precise account of production using quipus, a system of statistics which was made on long strings which were knotted up and tied in precise ways in order to give accurate information about agricultural resources.

Finally, there were large storehouses called qolqas, the places in which harvests were placed.

On the religious side, Winaywayna also has many fountains -around 10- which were used for the worshipping of water, clearly denoting the importance of agriculture to the Inca empire; indeed, possession of productive soil and food was the actual source of survival and wealth in the pre-Hispanic Andes, thus the empire had control over all of it.

Enjoy the beauty of Andean nature

Winaywayna shows an incredible architectural beauty and majesty, and really interesting historical and cultural information as well, but this is not all; it is placed amid the most wonderful landscapes of huge green mountains, the Urubamba river and lush vegetation, and where you can also find free Andean-only animals like the famous llama and the Andean eagle, the condor. It is a spot filled with the strong energy flow of Andean nature, in a clean, healthy, relaxing environment. It is certainly one of the highlights of the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail and of the Short 2-Day Inca Trail.
