Machu Picchu is the most popular destination, but the city of Cusco, Lake Titicaca, the city of Arequipa, and the city of Lima are other places to see.

Do I need a visa to go to Peru?

It depends on your country of citizenship.  See this for more information about who needs a visa to come to Peru.

What is the currency? Can I use U.S. Dollars?

The currency in Peru is the Nuevo Sol.  You can use U.S. Dollars in many stores and restaurants especially in touristic areas, but not all. Therefore it is a good idea to have soles with you. You can exchange your money in many places including the airport, in banks, or in currency exchange companies.

Lima CityHow can I arrive?

Most travelers first arrive in Lima and then go to their destination within the whole country. You can also arrive in Arequipa and then go on to another city, but this is less common and Arequipa does not have as many international flights as Lima. You can take a bus from another bordering country, but many find this uncomfortable and it takes more time.

What is the food like?

Peru has been rated as having the best food in the world 2 years in a row. There is a great variety of food and it is different in different parts of the country. In the Andes Mountain areas, cuy (baked guinea pig) is eaten as a delicacy. International foods are popular and international food chains can be found in some cities.

What is the weather like?

clima.peruIt is different in different parts of the country. In Lima it is often hot and there is little or no rain. In Cusco it can get cold, especially at night. Cusco also receives a lot of rain. Machu Picchu is usually warmer than Cusco, but it still rains there.

Will I have to speak Spanish to go to Peru?

No, but you should learn at least some words and phrases, such as how to ask for directions, how to order in a restaurant, or how to ask for something in a store.

Could I get altitude sickness?

In Cusco and Machu Picchu, some travelers get altitude sickness, but it is usually not severe. See this for more information.
