There is much more to do in Peru than see Machu Picchu. Although Machu Picchu is a unique experience, there are other ancient sites similar to Machu Picchu. Choquequirao is often called “the other Machu Picchu” because it is similar to Machu Picchu but does not have as many tourists.

Also, don’t think that all Peru has to offer are Inca sites, there are modern cities, beautiful beaches, Spanish colonial architecture, and much natural beauty.

Peru is more than one world wonder

Peru is like having several countries in one. Some people think of Peru and they think of Inca culture and Inca sites. It is true that the Incas once controlled much of what is now Peru and their culture greatly influences the mountain regions of Peru today. However much of the coastal part of Peru was more influenced by the Spanish. Lima was founded by the Spanish in 1551, and was built to be like the cities in Spain. Lima has a lot of Spanish architecture, and its culture is traditionally more European than Incan.

The Lima Main Square will tell you the history of Lima.

Lima also received a lot of immigration from Europe and Asia during the 19th century, so much that half of Lima’s population consisted of immigrants from outside of Peru at one point in the 19th century. Many people in Peru think of the coastal and mountain parts of Peru as separate countries. In addition to that you have the rainforest region of Peru with many cultures that are not heavily influenced either by the Incas or the Spanish. For this reason Peru has many countries in one.

The best destination for History lovers

Peru has a lot of history. In addition to all of the unique Inca history there were many pre-Inca groups in different parts of the country that also left behind sites like Chan Chan near Trujillo. In addition, Lima has the oldest university in the Western Hemisphere.
