On day 1, Inca Trail experience immerses you in a captivating blend of history and natural wonder. After being picked up from your hotel in Cusco and transferred to the train station in Ollantaytambo, the journey begins with exploration and trekking. Starting at Km 104, the trail leads to significant archaeological sites like Chachabamba and Wiñaywayna, both steeped in Incan heritage and strategically nestled in the mountainous landscape. The day wraps up with the arrival at Machu Picchu, allowing time to marvel at and capture the iconic views of this astonishing site. The bus descent to Aguas Calientes provides a well-deserved break before coordinating dinner and preparations with the guide for the next day.

Day 2 is dedicated to an in-depth exploration of Machu Picchu. It commences with a bus ride from Aguas Calientes to the Citadel, followed by a guided tour of the Sanctuary’s main sites. This immersive experience into Incan history and culture provides insights into the significance and magic of each structure and corner of Machu Picchu. After the tour, you return to Aguas Calientes for free time, where you can choose to have lunch, explore the charming town, or unwind in the thermal baths. The journey back to Cusco unfolds with a train ride from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo, followed by a van transfer back to your hotel, marking the end of this captivating two-day expedition along the legendary Inca Trail.

2.- Inca Jungle – 4 days and 3 nights

This tour is available on a daily basis; it consists on biking and hiking and it partially takes an old Inca road. It is an adventure package.

Over four exciting days, this adventure unfolds with an exhilarating journey from Cusco to Abra Malaga, followed by a guided biking excursion and a scenic lunch break. After lunch, enjoy various activities like canoeing or rafting for about 1 hour and 20 minutes. The upgraded accommodations set the stage for Day 2, featuring a hike in Santa Maria, lunch at Quellomayo village, a visit to Santa Teresa’s hot springs, and an optional village hike. Day 3 offers optional ziplining, a transfer to Hidroeléctrica, a guided walk to Aguas Calientes with lunch en route, ending with a stay in Aguas Calientes. This package is a great mix of adventure, hiking, site-visiting and comfort, another top alternative trek to the Classic 4-Day Inca Trail.

3.- Salkantay Trek, 5 days and 4 nights

Now this tour goes beyond the Classic 4-day Inca Trail, because it is longer and the route reaches much higher altitudes and difficult terrains; this trek falls in the demanding category, really a challenge for daring adventurers. Available daily.

The trek starts early on day 1, and actually for the first 3 days it goes upwards through the rough, challenging but at the same time breathtaking beautiful geography of the Andes range, with its wide, massive landscapes, its snowies considered sacred by the Incas, the amazing typical flora of the region and the encounters with free Andean camelids like llamas and alpacas, which will surely make great pictures. Nightly campsites at the Andean cold heights and stops at typical villages for some refreshment, meals and typical Andean food. Day 2 and day 3 have challenging total hiking distances of 20 and 15 km. respectively. On day 4 the trek begins turning downwards and we’ll reach the Machu Picchu Hydroelectric, and after 3 and a half days of hiking there will be a well-deserved accommodation in the Aguas Calientes village (closest to Machu Picchu), to spend the rest of the day and stay overnight at a hotel, after 3 adventurous nights sleeping in tents. The last day we’ll get to the Machu Picchu sanctuary on an uphill hike, and there have a 3-hour professionally guided tour of the site; after going back to Aguas Calientes, you’ll have the rest of the day free until 06:00 pm when the return to Cusco city begins.

This trek is really adventurous and demanding, combining all the wonderful attractions and features Andean nature can offer, with a grand finale with the arrival and tour of the Machu Picchu sanctuary.

4.- Lares Trek, 4 days and 3 nights

This top alternative trek for 2024 offers an experience akin to the Salkantay, because it includes hiking along the Andean highlands exploring its magnificent natural beauty, knowing typical flora and fauna, archaeological Inca remains and finally going down towards Machu Picchu on the border of the Peruvian western jungle. Daily availability.

On day 1 we will have a transfer ride until the Lares village (3.260 meters above sea level) where the hike starts; it’s a 4-hour stretch until the Wacawasi village (3.880 meters above sea level). We’ll spend the night at a campsite close to this village. Day 2 is amazing hiking and natural attractions, like the Ipsaykassa Pass, located at a staggering 4.450 meters above sea level, and the beautiful Ipsaycocha Lagoon; at this point, you will be in the middle of the habitat of Andean-only fauna, like alpacas, llamas and condors. Hiking on this day will take you to the amazing Ollantaytambo village, known as “living Inca place” because it remains almost the same as in Inca times, where there is also a monumental Inca archaeological site, still intriguing to modern construction engineers. On day 4, you will be in Aguas Calientes village, and we’ll have a bus ride to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu for a 3-hour professionally guided tour; afterwards you will have free time to continue touring the citadel by yourself, and back down in Aguas Calientes the rest of the day is free, until late afternoon when it’s time to go back to Cusco city.

This tour is also physically and psychologically demanding, reaches amazing altitudes and landscapes, but also gives the experience of a lifetime with the wonderful geography and ecology of the Andes range. Priceless top alternative trek!
