Day 1 - Tour of Uros Islands.
Once you are on the boat, we start the boat excursion of Lake Titicaca by visiting “The Uros Floating Islands”, small local communities or families who have lived on the reed Islands for decades. Centuries ago the small indigenous Uros tribe conceived of the islands as a way to isolate and protect themselves from rival tribes, those of the Collas and the Incas. The people of Uros harvested the reeds in the shallows of the lake, bundled them together tightly and built floating island platforms wide enough to build their reed
houses and canoes; this way they created their own little worlds. Apart from admiring the way the locals of los Uros make everything of reed, we will also learn, with the help of our local guides, about their lifestyles and customs.
Tour of Amantani Island with homestay.
We will continue on our tour of Lake Titicaca to Amantani Island and meet with local families. We will follow the tour with a trek up the local mountain and enjoy the great scenery. Tonight, we will enjoy a rare cultural experience on our overnight homestay with a Peruvian family. For the night we will split into smaller groups and billet into Peruvian family homes to experience their style of living first-hand, a once-in-a-lifetime cultural experience, including a local meal. Overnight homestay.
The local families, for the homestay, rotate taking in visitors, and accommodation is assigned upon arriving on the island. Guest rooms tend to be the best rooms in
the house (or outbuilding) but they are still quite basic. There may be limited, or no electricity and the guide may be in a different house as most families do not have enough room to house more than 2 guests. The meals served are simple but wholesome, usually based around potatoes, quinoa (Inca rice) and fish. It is a nice gesture to take fresh fruit, vegetables, bread or candles as a small gift for locals. After dinner guests are usually invited to a dance in the village meeting place.
Day 2 - Tour of Taquile Island.
We will continue our journey the second day towards “Taquile Island”. Taquile is a traditional Quechua speaking community; this non-artificial island is full of ancient agricultural terraces.
The population of Taquile was relatively isolated from the mainland until 1950s; here the notion of “community and family” is still very strong among them. The weaving tradition of the locals at Taquile Island goes back to early civilizations and that is why
the people of Taquile keep elements from pre-Inca Andean cultures alive in the present. All weaving is done on pre-Inca fixed and pedal looms. The most characteristic garments of this community of Lake Titicaca are the so-called “Chullos”, a knitted hat with an earflap, and “The Calendar Waistband”, depicting the annual cycles connected to rituals and agricultural activities. Once we reach the shores of Taquile Island at Lake Titicaca, we will walk up along a beautiful narrow path, enjoying impressive views of the Lake Titicaca and gorgeous little houses inhabited by the direct decedents of the Inca Culture on the way. At the top of the Island, we will have some free time to explore the village on your own and afterwards you will meet the group for lunch at a local family restaurant, a great cultural experience. After lunch, we will walk down to the harbor again to take our boat back to Puno. We will be back in Puno at about 5 pm. And take you back to your hotel.
