About Us

The 5-day Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu is ranked among the very top ones in the world! It is a challenging, amazing adventure across the highest paths of the Andean range! Here we will tell you about the best time of the year to do this exciting tour.

Best Time of the Year to Do the Salkantay Trek

We strongly recommend you book the Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu on Cusco region’s dry season, which runs from early April to late October. On dry season here, there isn’t any rain at all, none. This is important because you will be hiking on uneven, steep, rocky terrain and if it gets muddy and slippery too, then it gets even more demanding (unless you are really looking for taking your strength and hiking boots to the limit!). Although on dry season the temperatures are lower -expect them to get below zero oftentimes- and the path gets quite windy, it is still preferable to heavy raining conditions (rainy season goes from November to late March).

High Season for the Salkantay Trek

Sunny days to enjoy the landscape of the road to Salkantay.

Now high season for the Salkantay Trek is from June to August. No rain at all, but the temperatures get to their lowest and the wind gets to its strongest. However this is the time of the year when you will find the most people doing this hike.

There is also what we call shoulder seasons, that is, from April to June and from September to November. On the former, no rain at all and warmer temperatures and on the latter, no rain mostly and warm temperatures (it may rain a little starting mid-November).

Get Even More Than the Salkantay Trek and Machu Picchu!

However, if you do come down here on rain season for this is your best time, we enthusiastically recommend around mid-February, because it is Cusco’s Carnival, to see and greatly enjoy typical Andean dances, music, delicious food and drinks and a general upbeat atmosphere throughout the region!

If you come on high season, we cannot avoid to suggest the amazing Inti Raymi (Sun Festival) whose central day in on June 24th. This is a mighty event that is conducted at three places in Cusco City: the Koricancha Temple, the Plaza de Armas (Main Square) and the majestic Sacsayhuaman fortress, truly recreating the worship the ancient Incas offered to the Sun, deemed the giver of light, warmth, agriculture and life in general.
