About Us

We all know about the splendid Machu Picchu citadel, in the Urubamba valley, frontier of the Amazonian jungle. Choquequirao is sometimes called Machu Picchu’s twin citadel! They have a location and architecture quite alike. Also, the path to get there has become very famous and trendy among hikers worldwide, for many reasons: beautiful landscapes (both Andean and Amazonian), unique flora and fauna, strong, reviving energy flow and finally, the arrival at one of the best archaeological sites in the Cusco region.

Moreover, the Choquequirao trek also includes camping nights in the open and the chance to pick delicious tropical fruits directly from trees in the Cusco wilderness! Very outdoors! Historically, Choquequirao was one of the last places Inca armies used as a hideaway from Spanish invaders, after fleeing Cusco City. Finally, its name derives from the several gold mines the Incas exploited back then, it has to do with “shining” and “golden light” that is born there.

Next, we will share with you all there is to know, the insider tips for a great time doing the Choquequirao trek!

  • The average altitude for this tour is 3,200 meters above sea level (10,500 feet approximately). So it is advisable to arrive in Cusco City a couple of days before, in order to acclimatize, that is, getting used to breathing air with less oxygen.
  • Drinking plenty of water is also quite helpful against altitude sickness and so is coca leaves tea. Ultimately, there are pills you can buy, however, they are nothing more than a mix of natural, energetic herbs
  • Of course, don’t forget to bring water to the trek itself and if you bring a flask of coca leaves tea, it will surely help. Coca leaves are a tradition in Cusco and the Andean world: they numb hunger, cold, pain, tiredness and increase mental activity
  • Remember during the Choquequirao trek you’ll be taking long walks on uneven terrain, so don’t bring a heavy backpack… the maximum recommended weight is about 6kg (13,23 pounds approximately)
  • In our 4-day Choquequirao trek, we offer 3 meals daily and breakfast on the final day; however, a good insider tip is also bringing some snacks of your own, like fruits or protein bars, so you don’t have to wait some hours if hunger happens to strike
  • A hiking pole is always very helpful for saving energy, having much more traction and balance. We have them for rent if you don’t want to travel with one
  • Also, trekking boots can be tricky: do not bring new ones to the Choquequirao trek, they will get your feet blistered! Bring ones that you’ve already used for a while and your feet are used to
  • Do not forget for any reason: sun hat or cap, dark glasses, sunblock, insect repellent. You will find more details about packing here
  • About electronic devices: there are small villages along the Choquequirao trek, where there is electricity to charge them. However, lately a rising number of hikers is starting to use portable solar panels, they’re clean, eco-friendly energy
  • While in Cusco, always carry your passport, it actually works as an ID card, it will be required frequently. Also, while doing the Choquequirao trek, bring some cash in soles (our currency) because there are no banks or ATMs
  • On day 4, we reach the very healthy and repairing thermal waters of Conoc. So bring a towel, bathsuit and sandals
  • Bring a warm pajama for the camping nights. In case you don’t have a sleeping mat, we have them for rent

Otherwise, simply set your mind to enjoy walking for hours and exercising, releasing all stress you may carry inside, entering in union with the beauty and natural energy of the Cusco geography, renewing body and mind.

The Choquequirao trek is one more wonder everyone can enjoy to the fullest here in the mountains of Cusco region. Ancient paths that were opened by the Inca civilization and now are a luxury adventure experience for many people from all sides of the planet. Walk on.
