Cusco is a great place to spend Christmas, and decorations are everywhere. There are nativity scenes all over the city, including a big one in the Plaza de Armas. There are parties and festivities in and around the Plaza, with music and dance.
Many in Cusco organize Christmas events for the less fortunate, inviting them to a cup of hot chocolate and giving them toys. On December 24 you can visit the Santuranticuy Christmas market in the Plaza de Armas. People come here from surrounding villages to sell handicrafts. Santuranticuy means: “the selling of the saints”. This fair has been going on in Cusco for about 500 years. At about midnight, there are fireworks all over Cusco.
On Christmas, many people eat Paneton, a food originally from Italy that is popular around Christmas, and hot chocolate.
