Whether in Lima or another outpost, we’ll show you where to enjoy exquisite dishes like Ceviche, Lomo Saltado, and Pisco Sour. They are mostly served in small, chef-run restaurants where you can behold the cooking action. Here’s a detailed description of each one of them.

1. Ceviche

We love Ceviche for its distinctive spicy taste. Peruvian chefs prepare it using raw fish, garlic, chili marinade, and lemon juice. It’s distinctive mouth-tingling taste should remain with you forever. Since we know all the places you can have the best Ceviche in the country, trust us to help you.

In Lima, we recommend the Chez Wong, Chef Javier Wong’s private dinner. Characteristically, the restaurant has no menu, and so must explain whether you’ll have your dish hot or cold. Then you can sit pretty and watch Chef Wong get your meal ready.

Cusco’s open-air restaurant Barrio de Ceviche on Plaza de Armas is also worth trying. Once here, you could sit in the kitchen at the chef’s table and enjoy the action. Only that in Cusco, other fish types are rare. So, expect Ceviche made using trout.

2. Lomo Saltado

You should never leave Peru without trying Lomo Saltado, the country’s version of stir fry beef. You can find the staple comfort food in restaurants all year round. You’ll find Lomo Saltado on the menu regardless of your destination in Peru. Chefs prepare the beef together with French fries. They serve it with rice.

Although traditionally cooked using sirloin steak, some variations of the dish may include chicken. In Lima, you can eat Lomo Saltado at Isolina Taberna Peruana in the Barranco district.

The Morena Peruvian Kitchen in Cusco also serves a delicious Lomo Saltado. Or you could try eating at the Pukasoncco Arte y Restaurante in Paracas.

3. Pisco Sour

You can’t possibly leave Peru without trying Pisco Sour, a favorite local drink since it’s invention in the 1920s. Locals prepare it by blending Pisco, egg white, fresh lemon juice, Angostura bitter, and cane syrup. Pisco sour is available everywhere in Peru.

You’ll get the best Pisco Sour in Lima at the Old Tavern Queirolo. Alternatively, try the English car saloon at the Country Club Lima Hotel. We recommend starting your meal time with Pisco Sour followed by a generous serving of Lomo Saltado. 

In Cusco, sample Pisco Sour at the Museo del Pisco. Instead of serving it plain, bartenders infuse Pisco into pineapple juice, chocolate, passion fruit, or coffee. While here, learn how to prepare a good cocktail.
