About Us

The Huayna Picchu mountain is the higher one of the two at the Machu Picchu site. The hike along its attached constructions and beautiful vegetation, until the summit with an all-around splendid view has become a sensation among visitors. Here are the FAQ so you will have a really top experience there!

1. How can I manage altitude symptoms?

They may happen because the air gets “thinner” – meaning with less oxygen- the higher you go. However, the response to it varies and everybody finally manages to have a great time. So the idea is to compensate the decreased oxygen in your system. First solution is arriving at Cusco City some days prior, so the body will automatically start to adapt. Have a good intake of bottled water -it brings oxygen atoms into the bloodstream- and also drink coca leaves tea, an excellent Andean energizer. Avoid much physical activity initially. Finally, there are pills available at any drugstore which eliminate the symptoms, but few people will need them.

2. What gear should I have for the Huayna Picchu hike?

Not really much. A sun hat or cap, sunglasses, polyester t-shirt (the best to keep your body dry), nylon pant or short, mountaineering socks, hiking boots (used, so you prevent blistering). If coming on rain season (November to March), just an additional rain poncho will do. Sunscreen and bug repellent are obligatory. Bottled water, some coca leaves tea (recommended), snacks for you’ll do it between main meals. Photographic camera (not a professional one, they are not allowed), smartphone. A light backpack and then you are well-equipped for this wonderful adventure!

3. Will I do the hike with a guide?

There is not really need for one. First, the path upwards and back is defined, you can not get lost, there will be more people. Second, most of the trail is wide enough and when it gets narrow there are cables you can hold along. Remember, after this hike you will do the guided Machu Picchu tour so you can easily ask him something, if needed, about the trek.

4. I have seen posts online stating that this hike is very dangerous. How true is this?

It is only dangerous if you jump out of the path or suffer from serious vertigo… people who say this are actually trying to get attention so they get more views and/or promote some product on YouTube and other social media. Currently the Huayna Picchu trek has a 5-star rating on Tripadvisor and what hikers actually say is you need an adequate level of fitness, nobody says it is dangerous unless someone gets quite reckless, like walking on a ledge.

Huayna Picchu FAQ

The walk is not dangerous unless you break the rules.

5. How high is the Huayna Picchu mountain?

This is a very good FAQ. Please do not be confused: it is located at a 2.720 meters (8.923 feet) above sea level elevation (as is Machu Picchu itself), lower than Cusco City actually. But the actual height of the mountain is just 360 meters (1.180 feet).

6. How long does it take, the round hike?

At the most it will take 3 hours for everything, including the time you will spend enjoying the 360-degree view at the summit. The upwards section takes from 1:30 to 2:00 hours, while the going back down from 45 minutes to 1 hour. Our tours give you 3 hours, which is enough for even take a break before the beginning of the Machu Picchu guided visit.

7. Is it ok for children and elders?

Yes. People of all ages can do this hike to the Huayna Picchu summit, the only requisite is having enough stamina for the excursion. Of course people are allowed to take breaks whenever needed.

8. Many people praise the summit of the Huayna Picchu. What is the attraction there?

Indeed, it is a magical spot. You will have a panoramic view of the entire valley where Machu Picchu is located, massive, beautiful green mountains, also a unique sight of the citadel itself, attached to the mountains way down. This place has a strong flow of relaxing, invigorating natural energy too, which goes unnoticed for nobody. Remember that Machu Picchu was originally built as a luxury retreat for Inca royals, they went there to get away from everything, have political meetings and religious rituals.

Huayna Picchu FAQ

The biggest attraction of this passeo, the Temple of the Moon.

9. Is this hike like the Inca Trails, that is, do I need to book weeks or months in advance?

No. The Huayna Picchu trek is part of some of our Machu Picchu packages (for an additional price), so they are available on a daily basis all year long. We always recommend booking with a little advance but tours are surely available for whenever you want. The hike can be done on two shifts: 7:00 am and 10:00 am.

10. I have heard that there are new regulations for the Machu Picchu tour. What are they?

Indeed, starting July 2017 some new rules were enacted. These are the most important: no walking sticks, no selfie sticks, no tripods, no professional cameras. Large backpacks are not allowed anymore. No smoking or drinking at all, any antisocial behavior (violence, theft, lewdness, ecological and archaeological damage) will be grounds for expulsion and even legal action.

Thus, the Huayna Picchu trek is a wonderful adventure guaranteed, providing you are in a proper fitness level and are not prone to major recklessness. It’s just a matter of walking up, spending a wonderful time at the summit and then walking down faster, ready for touring the unforgettable Machu Picchu citadel.
