About Us

Private tourism companies operating the hilltop sanctuary circuit have made one more great contribution: a new organic waste plant in Machu Picchu! This is already transforming such kind of garbage into charcoal, a sustainable fertilizer for the region’s lands.

Aguas Calientes and Machu Picchu Are Environmentally Efficient

Ecological Proficiency. This wonderful plant is located in Aguas Calientes, the cozy village next to the citadel. Now there is an entire environmental sustainability system operating in this circuit: one which converts cooking oil to bio-diesel and glicerine, one which handles recyclable plastic and now the new organic waste plant in Machu Picchu.

Best Use of Organic Disposals. All organic waste produced daily in Aguas Calientes will be taken to the plant and transformed to charcoal, which in turn will be used by local farmers as fertilizer. Also, this charcoal is going to help reforest the Machu Picchu complex’s surrounding areas. Thus, Aguas Calientes village and the Machu Picchu site are really close to be 100% ecologically efficient, 100% sustainable destinations.

An Eco-Friendly Destination. Therefore, tourists who get to the wonderful Machu Picchu site either on a classic tour (for example the great 2-day package) or doing one of the fantastic Inca Trails (the most famous is the Classic 4-Day), can be sure they will be visiting an archaeological area which is operated in an ecologically-conscious way. Next, we list some of the environmental sustainability measures already in place at the Aguas Calientes-Machu Picchu circuit:

  • Ban of disposable plastic for almost all items (bottles, cups, dishes, straws, polystyrene, etc) (Machu Picchu site).
  • Cleaning of the Inca Trail paths, several times a year.
  • Compaction of all one-use plastic found in Aguas Calientes, and sending for recycling.
  • Transformation of cooking oil to bio-diesel and glycerine (Aguas Calientes).
  • Conversion of organic waste to charcoal fertilizer (Agua Calientes).
  • Use of biodegradable products like non-toxic soaps, shampoos, dish and laundry detergents, etc (for protection of water sources).
