DESCRIPTION OF THE PLACES TO VISIT

The city of Cusco, from its beginnings, was an important center of the Inca civilization, considered the capital of the Tahuantinsuyo. When walking through its streets today, we can still observe the magnificence of the constructions that date back to this culture. This experience allows us to visit the main places in the city, such as:

  • The Basilica of the Cathedral of Cusco: An artistic and architectural gem. It stands in the main square, on the site of the Kiswar Kancha, which was the residence of the Inca ruler Viracocha. Inside, you can find marvelous works of art in wood, paintings from the Cusco school with details in embossed silver and gold leaf. (Upon request)
  • The Temple of Qoricancha: It was the most important religious center in the city, built to worship the Sun (the main deity in Inca times) and other deities (Stars, Rainbow, Lightning, and Moon). On the foundations of Qoricancha, the Santo Domingo temple was built, which houses beautiful paintings in its colonial art gallery.
  • Sacsayhuaman: It is a magnificent construction with stones of large dimensions, joined with astonishing precision, resembling a puzzle. For a long time, it was considered a fortress, but current studies consider it a multifunctional center, as it has both storage and religious sectors. It is the place where the Intiraymi festival takes place.
  • Qenqo (Labyrinth): Considered an Inca ceremonial center. It features an open space called an amphitheater where their idols and mummies were placed in the 19 trapezoidal niches it has. Additionally, every year, the event called “The Awakening of the Puma” takes place on one of the rocky elevations.
  • Puka Pukara: Quechua name meaning “red fortress.” It is believed that the place was an old Tambo that served as a resting place and also for guarding. According to some records, this place probably had a chinkana (tunnel) that connected to Tambomachay.
  • Tambomachay: An archaeological complex formed by finely carved stones, interesting waterfalls, and aqueducts originating from nearby springs and sources. For all these reasons, it is associated with the worship of water and the adoration of this essential deity.
