The Ministerio de Cultura (Ministry of Culture) has zoned the Inca Trail, with the nomination of the Qhapaq Ñan to the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites.
The zoning was carried out on the parts of the trail that were nominated: Portachuelo – Piticocha and Pirca Pirca. The zoning was done in participation with local communities. The investigators for the project and representatives of local communities went over the 17 kilometers of the trail that were included in the nomination.
They used GPS to determine which points were to be part of the zones. Much of the work was done at an altitude of over 4,834 meters above sea level.
Inside the maximum protection areas are important natural and cultural items, such as the rock paintings of Cuchimachay, the lake of Mullococha, and the ruins of Pirca Pirca, Tambo Real and Piticocha. The area also includes the reserve of Nor Yauyos-Cochas.
