About Us

The Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu village is the closest to the sanctuary. It is also known as Machu Picchu station. It is included in most tours to the citadel, so here on this article we will tell our travelers about this really typical and enjoyable place.

What You Can Do in Aguas Calientes

Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu village is a lovely place located in the very middle of majestic green mountains and lush vegetation. You will also find colonial churches, statues of the Incas, peaceful squares, the flowing river crossing the village, great bars, restaurants and shops. Below we will tell what you need to have a great time:

  • The Hot Springs. They actually give Machu Picchu village its name, and visitors really like them, either they’re arriving from an Inca Trail or having the Machu Picchu tour. You will certainly enjoy the hot, relaxing pools. It is better to go in the morning because it may get a little crowded by the afternoon. The baths open at 5 am.
  • Massage parlors. Likewise, you can find many of these in Aguas Calientes, where you could get your body ok after an Inca Trail effort or give yourself a treat because many Machu Picchu tours include afternoons in the village.

  • The Putucusi or Happy Mountain. You can also hike up to its summit, where there is a wonderful view of the Machu Picchu citadel. Just be careful if it happens to be raining, because it will make the hike harder.
  • The Butterfly Research Center: daily guided tours at this place, where you will find many typical butterflies from the region, in a closed wood. Many types of them are between the branches and foliage, and flying around.
  • Shopping. Prices are kind of higher than in Cusco city, so we recommend you to ask for discounts and take a little time to compare costs. There is a typical handicraft market with very interesting products. Just remember to always bargain a little.
  • Eating. You will find a lot of great pizza places, and also restaurants that have top juices because Machu Picchu village is a place warmer than Cusco city. Also of course there are places for regular meals, and many Chinese food restaurants, in Peru called chifas. If you want to find economic meals, go to the local market. You will find everything at lower costs.
  • In Machu Picchu village there are also many bars where you can have good drinks and cold beers. Always keep in mind that you should bargain a little and compare prices, because people tend to charge a little more for this village’s closeness to Machu Picchu.
