The mines in Maras have been active since Inca times, and consists of a large, beautiful highlands area at 3.380 meters above sea level, where there are some 3.000 salt wells, from which it was taken and dried up, getting ready for trade in the days of the empire. The Moray Agricultural Laboratory, Amazing Inca Site
Another surprise the Incas left on their important legacy; 7 km. away from Maras, we will find the Moray site, which was an open-air area for the investigation and testing of varied types of soil and crops. The very foundation of Inca economy was agriculture, so they regularly conducted studies about plants and seeds; for example, typical Andean products like quinoa and maca, were originally poisonous, unfit for human use; with great patience and time, these and other crops were gradually adapted for humans. The main products the Incas cultivated were potato, coca and corn, which became the basis of their diet.
