The wonderful standard Short 2-day Inca Trail was partly interrupted during last April and May, due to an unusual late March landslide. We are very happy to tell you the usual trail is fully available again!
Due to this weather inconvenience, the section between km 104 -usual starting point of the trail- up to the vicinities of the Wiñaywayna Inca site was closed during April and May; this obliged the government agency in charge of the standard short 2-day Inca Trail to perform opening and maintenance works, after what the regular, standard trail was authorized again. In the meantime, hikers had been using an alternative trail which started at km 106 and went until Winaywayna; for this alternative route the the government ageny and tour operators like TOUR IN PERU decided to include the archaeological complex of Choquesuysuy, which is not actualy part of the standard 2-day Inca Trail.
During April and May, important repairment and maintenance works were done on bridges and stone stairways on the section between the Chachabamba Inca complex and Winaywayna-Inti Punku; also, the pavement was cleaned from landslide mud and rain drains were fit out. Government officials also informed that maintenance works were also conducted at archaeological sites like Chachabamba, Winaywayna, Intipata and Choquesuysuy.
So, after this brief interruption, we’re very glad to say that the standard Short 2-day Inca Trail, also known as the Sacred Tour is fully operational again!
