The Floating Islands of Uros

The floating islands of Uros are located just 14 km. (9 miles) away from Puno city, it takes around 30 min. from city to the island by boat. The name of Uros was used to name a very particular ethnic group that existed in Lake Titicaca with the Incas, Aymaras and older civilizations.

It is believed that the Uros were one of the first ethnic groups populating the Andean region. Those simple people who survived simply fishing and bird hunting didn’t want to join more advanced civilizations, they preferred to remain isolated. This is one of the reason why they decided to live in mobile houses on the lake, this way staying more isolated. In XVI century, the Uros were still living on the lake in small reed- boats that they used as floating houses.  Only in the early 60´s, Uros started build small artificial islands with reeds for their homes. The reeds are still very important material in daily life of Uros. They eat the reeds, build boats and houses with it, feed animals and use reed to make fire and cook. Another reason to get interesting tours out to the reed islands or other islands on the lake is because this gives you a great chance to experience the magic and desolate beauty of Lake Titicaca itself- the world’s highest elevation commercially navigable lake. To enjoy and have a closer look of the real Island life we would recommend you to stay over night at the home stay in Amantani Island.

Seeing the scenery from the boat around you, enjoying fresh and clean air, the magnificent greenish blue colors of the lake will give you a new perspective of the region and how nature and it’s parts influence the local life.
