These are a few interesting things that many people who visit do not know about Machu Picchu.
1. All inhabitants died of smallpox

This left the city uninhabited for centuries. This is one of the reasons that might explain the depopulation of Machu Picchu. Another theory tells of a mass exodus to other secluded locations
2. The Spanish probably never got to Machu Picchu.
It is said that the Spanish were tricked so that they could not find Inca strongholds.

3. It is against the rules to enter with a traditional costume from another country.
This is an interesting rule for Machu Picchu that few people know about. This rule is supposedly to maintain a controversy free area dedicated to the visit.
4. The Inca Trail is the most used way to get here.
The Inca Trail goes to Machu Picchu the same way the Incas did. On the way to Machu Picchu you will go by other ruins. The other ways to get here are by taking the bus and train.
5. Machu Picchu Town
Next to Machu Picchu is the town of Aguas Calientes. Here there are hotels, restaurants, and hot springs.
