About Us

The Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a 4-day splendid adventure in both mountains and jungle! Includes visiting several spectacular ruins. The Runccuracay site is one of them. Know more about this highlight of the hike across the Cusco Andes!

The Amazing Runccuracay Ruins

This is a heavenly spot to which explorers arrive on day 3. It’s a very impressive circular stone construction, which has a round, small square and two curved twin spaces which were indoor areas.

It’s located on a tiny plane, amid the mighty Andean mounts and slowly passing clouds, at an elevation of almost 13,123 feet (4,000 meters) over sea level. What was the purpose of this site? Well, the Incas had a quite efficient planning, so those ruins were actually a station for their runner-messengers (chaskis) to take a break for eating, rest, etc. The Incas didn’t have carriages, camels or horses so everything had to be done by walking or running. Chaskis used to make a stop in places like Runccuracay, conveniently built along the routes, in order to make a pause. They also refilled their bags with plenty of coca leaves, which they chewed to get more physical, mental energy, increased resistance to cold weather and tiredness.

From the amazing remains of Runccuracay, the hike continues and in the same day after a delicious lunch, you’ll reach the stunning ruins of Winaywayna, which is also the campsite for spending night 3. Know more about this fascinating attraction.
