About Us

The Chachabamba site is a wonderful stop included in our Short Inca Trail – 2 days. It was built in the middle of a marvelous jungle region, on the top of a hill, surrounded by priceless landscapes. Read about this spot and all the exciting hike.

Chachabamba Site Design

The Inca were quite skilled builders. They were able to attach a citadel to the shape of the mountains. Chachabamba is no exception. It was constructed on the top of a hill, from where people are able to scan the entire valley. Although most of the site stands over a flat surface, there are fascinating constructions which adapt to the curvy contours of the mountain. As in all their sites, everything is well-planned and the design itself is efficient and functional.

Purposes of the Chachabamba Citadel

Current archaeological and historic research holds that this site was most likely built for any or both of the following reasons: first, as a military fort to control all the area, because it was the access to the vicinities of Machu Picchu, which was the luxury retreat for the emperor, his family and the rest of the court. Second, as a religious complex for worshipping water, which was a central deity for them, because of the essential importance of agriculture for their survival.

On our website home you can access more information about Chachabamba and all destinations we cover.

How Does the Short Inca Trail Gets There?

Our great package for this hike begins in Cusco City. We will take everyone to the Ollantaytambo train station and from there to the Km 104 of the old highway to Machu Picchu. Hiking a little, crossing a bridge over the Urubamba river and again some walking, we arrive at the ruins. So it is actually at the very beginning of the trail. However, you could take the chance to enjoy a little break filling with the relaxing natural energy flow. For a perfect preparation, we suggest you read our articles on tips before the hike and a pice of advice while doing the Inca Trail. Also, it is very convenient for all trekkers to have some travel insurance for your security during your trip.

Location of the Ruins

It stands on the way down to Machu Picchu, entering the jungle border, somewhat following the course of the beautiful Urubamba river. Weather is usually warmer and sunnier than in Cusco City and higher altitudes (the ruins are at a 7,053 feet elevation or 2,150 meters). As we said, is really close to the Km 104 (starting point of the Short Trail). The site itself is astonishing: big, tall constructions with fine masonry work, some of them round-shaped, immersed in an absolute calmness and reviving energy currents, priceless mountainous landscapes, unique flora and fauna. Hikers will completely enjoy the place and our professionally-guided tour.

Next, the Short Trail continues until the spectacular Winaywayna site and day 1 hike finishes with the arrival at Inti Pinku or Sun Gate, the old entrance to Machu Picchu, for taking a break and delight with the views of the sanctuary. Finally, the first day ends on a bus ride down to Aguas Calientes, to spend the rest of the journey visiting this village or at the hotel. On day 2, the entire morning is for the amazing Machu Picchu tour and the afternoon to continue enjoying the cozy Aguas Calientes village. There is no hiking on this final day.
