There are large typical markets where one can do amazing shopping of Andean souvenirs like textiles, silver and gold objects, pottery, paintings, clothing and so on, at very convenient prices.
Then there’s the fantastic train ride until Aguas Calientes. Machu Picchu packages offer several trains for the journey: economical (Expedition), intermediate (Vistadome) and 5-star (Hiram Bingham Luxury). They have panoramic windows so the passenger will be able to enjoy all the time the astonishing beauty of the region, filled with woods, green mountains, river, a wide open sky most of the time. These trains are also entirely comfortable and the on board service is top-quality.
Aguas Calientes is a small, typical town next to the citadel which offers many treats: great restaurants and bars, vegan/natural juice shops, the hot springs, Andean and massage parlors, a big craftwork market, fancy hotels and also some cultural attractions like the Butterflies Institute (where one can see thousands of them), the museum of Inca history (with really much information you could use before going up to the site) and finally the quite enjoyable Plaza Manco Capac, a place to sit, walk, take pictures, videos and take in the wonderful view.

Retirement Trip: for elderly people, Cusco is also a very good destination. They just may need a couple of days in Cusco City first to get used to the thin, oxygen-low air (altitude 3.400 meters/11.154 feet above sea level), not much physical effort. All the hotels know how to efficiently help customers with altitude issues. Besides, they will be able to go around town for visiting interesting places, shopping, enjoying the natural scenery and so on. Now Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu is much lower, therefore much physically easier (2.400 meters/7.874 feet asl), with very nice weather and reinvigorating environment.
